These bovine serum albumin (BSA) solutions are protein concentration reference standards, Suitable for BCA, Bradford and other protein detection solutions. BSA is a universally recognized reference protein for total protein quantification. Albumin standards are precisely prepared at a concentration of 2 mg/mL in ultrapure 0.9% sodium chloride (saline) solution. The concentration of the stock solution can be calibrated by direct comparison to National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) purified BSA (Component V).

Selection of protein standards is probably the largest source of error in any protein assay. A good choice for a standard is the most abundant purified protein of known concentration contained in the sample to be tested. Often, highly purified target proteins of known concentration are not available, are either too expensive to be used as standards, or the sample itself is a mixture of many proteins (e.g., cell lysate). In this case, the optimal standard is one that yields a normal (i.e., average) color response curve using the selected protein detection method and is readily available to all researchers. BSA is one such protein, and Pierce Albumin Standards are a convenient source of ready-to-use BSA standards.

To obtain high accuracy when estimating total protein concentration in unknown samples, a standard curve must be included every time an assay is performed. This is especially true for protein detection methods that produce nonlinear standard curves. Determining the number of standards and replicates used to define a standard curve depends on the degree of nonlinearity in the standard curve and the required accuracy. In general, if the color response is linear, only a few points are needed to construct a standard curve. Typically, a standard curve is constructed using at least two replicate samples for each point on the curve.
